# Explaining the Rule of Madd Muttasil in Tajweed
- 📖 **Madd Muttaṣil** = a madd letter (Alif, Wāw, Yā’) followed by a hamzah **within the same word**, e.g. *as-samā’i*, *jī’a*, *sū’a*.
- ⏱️ **Length** in the Ḥafṣ ‘an ‘Āṣim narration: **4 or 5 counts** in continuation, and up to 6 when stopping on a word-final hamzah.
- ⚖️ **Ruling:** obligatory (wājib) with the reciters; shortening it to 2 counts is not permitted.
- 🔁 Keep a single length (4 or 5) throughout the whole Qur’an; don’t mix.
What is Madd Muttaṣil?

From our experience at Iqraa Irtaqii Academy, many students confuse Madd Muttaṣil (connected) with Madd Munfaṣil (separated). The simple rule: look at where the hamzah falls. If the hamzah comes after the madd letter **inside the same word**, it is **Muttaṣil**. If the madd letter ends one word and the hamzah begins the next, it is **Munfaṣil**.
### Why it is called “connected”
Because the madd letter and its cause (the hamzah) are joined in a single word with nothing separating them.
### Ruling and length
Scholars of tajweed classify Madd Muttaṣil as **obligatory**: it must be prolonged beyond the natural madd and may not be shortened. In the Ḥafṣ narration via the Shāṭibiyyah it is **4 or 5 counts**. If it falls at the end of a verse and you stop on it, 6 counts is permitted because two causes combine (the hamzah plus the temporary sukūn).
### Quranic examples
- With Alif: *as-samā’a*, *du‘ā’an*.
- With Yā’: *﴿wa jī’a yawma’idhin bi-jahannam﴾*.
- With Wāw: *qurū’in*, *as-sū’a*.

### A common mistake
The error we correct most: varying the madd length within one recitation, prolonging one word 4 counts and another 5. Keep a single length throughout.
