--------------------

IslamWeb's fatwa "Riba: its meaning, its types and the ruling on each" begins with a definition (Arabic original):

> فإن الربا في اللغة الزيادة، ومنه الرابية لزيادتها على ما حولها، ومنه قوله تعالى: فَإِذَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ.(الحج: من الآية5). والربا في اصطلاح الفقهاء يقصد به: زيادة مخصوصة لأحد المتعاقدين خالية عما يقابلها من العوض.

The two types of riba
---------------------

> ربا الديون: وهو الذي نزل القرآن بتحريمه، ومعناه: الزيادة في الدين مقابل الزيادة في الأجل. وهو الذي كان شائعاً في الجاهلية، وعادت إليه البنوك في واقعنا المعاصر، وهو أشهر أنواع الربا وأشدها قبحاً.

> ربا البيوع: وهو الذي يكون في بيع الأموال الربوية بعضها ببعض، والأموال الربوية التي ورد بها الحديث ستة وهي: الذهب، والفضة، والبر، والتمر، والملح، والشعير. وجمهور الفقهاء على أنه يلحق بهذه الأصناف الأموال الأخرى، والتي تتحد معها في العلة.

Riba al-fadl and riba al-nasi'ah
--------------------------------

> الأول: ربا الفضل: ومعناه الزيادة في أحد العوضين عن الآخر عند بيع مال ربوي بمال ربوي من جنسه، مثل: بيع الذهب بالذهب، فلا يجوز بيع الذهب بالذهب إلا متماثلاً، وأي زيادة في أحد الجانبين تجعل هذا البيع بيعاً ربوياً.

> الثاني: ربا النسيئة: وهو تأخر قبض أحد العوضين في بيع الأموال الربوية إذا كانت متحدة في العلة، فإذا بيع مال ربوي بغير جنسه كأن يباع ذهب بفضة أو العكس، أو أن تباع عملة بعملة أخرى، فإنه يجوز فيها التفاضل أي الزيادة والنقص لاختلاف الجنس، ولكن لا يجوز تأخير قبض أحد العوضين، بل لا بد من التقابض في مجلس العقد.
