# The Practical Steps of Istikhara Prayer: From Intention to Dua

Introduction: What is Istikhara Prayer and Why do we Perform It?
----------------------------------------------------------------

Through our dedication at Iqraa Irtaqii Academy to teaching Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) in a practical and simplified manner, we view the **Istikhara Prayer** as one of the most crucial acts of worship that comforts the heart of a hesitant believer. Salat al-Istikhara is a Prophetic Sunnah taught to us by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to seek refuge in Allah when we are uncertain about a decision (whether regarding marriage, work, travel, or other pivotal matters). Its purpose is to seek divine guidance and delegate the matter to Allah, asking Him to choose what is best for us in this world and the Hereafter.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Perform Istikhara
----------------------------------------------

To perform the Istikhara prayer correctly according to the Prophetic tradition, follow these steps:

- **Ablution and Intention:** Perform Wudu (ablution) as you would for any prayer, and make a sincere intention in your heart to pray two non-obligatory (Sunnah) Rak'ahs specifically for Istikhara.
- **The Prayer:** Pray two Rak'ahs. It is recommended (though not obligatory) to recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Al-Fatiha in the first Rak'ah, and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second.
- **The Supplication (Dua):** After saying the Tasleem (or before it, according to some scholars), raise your hands in supplication and recite the authentic Dua of Istikhara reported from the Prophet (ﷺ).

-----------------------------------------------

The Muslim recites: *"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty..."* continuing to the end of the Dua, where they specify their need (e.g., "O Allah, if You know that this marriage, or this job..."). After Istikhara, one should proceed with their decision and trust in Allah. Whatever Allah facilitates is the good He has chosen, and whatever He places obstacles in front of is the harm He has averted. It is a common misconception that one must see a dream or feel a sudden change of heart after performing it.
