The Importance and Ruling of the Two Eid Prayers ------------------------------------------------ The two Eid prayers (Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha) are among the most prominent manifest rituals of Islam, where Muslims gather to glorify and praise Allah for completing the blessing of fasting or performing the Hajj pilgrimage. The majority of scholars consider it a "confirmed Sunnah" (Sunnah Mu'akkadah), while some consider it a "communal obligation" (Fard Kifayah). It is preferably prayed in open spaces (Musallas) outside mosques if possible, to showcase joy and unity among Muslims. The Method of Performing the Eid Prayer --------------------------------------- The Eid prayer consists of two Rak'ahs performed without Adhan or Iqamah. In the first Rak'ah, the Imam pronounces the opening Takbeer (Takbeerat Al-Ihram), followed by seven additional Takbeers, raising the hands with each. It is recommended to say: "Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar" between the Takbeers. Then, he recites Al-Fatihah and another Surah (preferably Surah Al-A'la or Qaf). In the second Rak'ah, the Imam pronounces five Takbeers after the Takbeer of standing up, then recites Al-Fatihah and a Surah (preferably Surah Al-Ghashiyah or Al-Qamar). After the prayer concludes, the Imam delivers the Eid sermon. Sunnahs and Etiquettes of the Day of Eid ---------------------------------------- Eid in Islam has Sunnahs and etiquettes that a Muslim is recommended to observe to honor the ritual. Among the most important are: performing Ghusl (ritual bath) before heading out to pray, applying perfume and wearing the best clothes, eating before leaving on Eid Al-Fitr (an odd number of dates), and delaying eating on Eid Al-Adha until one eats from their sacrifice. It is also recommended to go to the prayer via one route and return via another, to recite the Takbeer frequently in the streets, and to display joy and exchange greetings with family and neighbors.
