# Rulings and Etiquette of Istikhara Prayer: Common Fiqh Questions

What is the Istikhara Prayer and Why Do We Perform It?
------------------------------------------------------

In their daily life, a Muslim encounters many situations that require making crucial decisions, such as marriage, choosing a major, or a job. Amidst confusion, Islam prescribed the "Istikhara Prayer" to entrust the matter to Allah Almighty and seek the best from Him, as He is the All-Knowing of the consequences of affairs. Istikhara means seeking the good in something; it is a confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) and is evidence of a Muslim's sincere reliance on their Lord and certainty that what Allah chooses is best.

How to Perform the Istikhara Prayer and Its Supplication
--------------------------------------------------------

The Istikhara prayer is performed as two non-obligatory Rak'ahs (supererogatory). It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Al-Fatihah in the first Rak'ah, and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second. After concluding the prayer with Tasleem, the Muslim raises their hands and recites the authentic "Istikhara Supplication" transmitted from the Prophet (PBUH): "O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge and Your decree by Your power...". Here comes the role of a proper jurisprudential foundation; it is essential for a Muslim to learn these Sunnahs and pass them on to their children. At Iqraa Irtaqii Academy, we integrate the teaching of acts of worship and prophetic Sunnahs into our programs, so the child grows up understanding their religion and applying it in every detail of their practical life.

---------------------------------------------------

Some mistakenly believe that Istikhara must be followed by a dream, which is incorrect. After performing Istikhara, the Muslim should resolve on the matter their heart inclines toward and proceed with it. If it is good, Allah will facilitate it and remove its obstacles; if it is bad, Allah will turn them away from it and make them content with what He has decreed. Tranquility and the facilitation of means are the true signs of the outcome of Istikhara.
