IslamWeb's fatwa "The natural madd: its definition and length" says (Arabic original):

> فالمد الطبيعي أو الأصلي هو الذي لا تقوم بنية الحرف إلا به ولا يحتاج إلى سبب، ومقدار مده حركتان اتفاقا، لا يزاد ولا ينقص عنهما

How is it applied in practice?
------------------------------

> وعليه؛ فإن المد الطبيعي سواء في الفاتحة أو غيرها لا يزاد على حركتين، ولا يحتاج ذلك إلى عد فبمجرد النطق الطبيعي به دون تكلف يأتي القدر المطلوب منه، ولا ينبغي عده والتأكد من مقداره فإن ذلك مما يجر للوسوسة ويزيد منها، وصاحب الطبع السليم عادة لا يزيد المد الطبيعي عن قدره ولا ينقصه عنه، والمد إنما هو لحرف المد، وهو الألف هنا، وليس لفتحة الميم، فهذه لا مد فيها.

Common mistakes
---------------

- **Over-lengthening:** as the quoted text notes, the natural madd is not extended.
