# Understanding the Rules of the Natural Madd (Elongation) in Tajweed

The Natural Madd: The First Rule in the Chapter of Elongation

### Definition
The natural madd is the elongation without which the very identity of the madd letter cannot be established, with no hamzah or sukūn after it. It is called “natural” because a person of sound nature neither shortens it below two counts nor lengthens it above them.
### Its conditions
- The madd letter must carry sukūn.
- The preceding vowel must match it (fatḥah before Alif, ḍammah before Wāw, kasrah before Yā’).
- No hamzah or sukūn may follow it.
### Its length
Two counts only. Keeping this length steady throughout the recitation is a mark of a well-controlled tilāwah.
### Types by position
- **Fixed in continuation and stopping:** *qāla*, *al-kitāb*.
- **Fixed when stopping, not in continuation** (madd al-‘iwaḍ): a fatḥah-tanwīn stopped on with an Alif: *‘alīman* → “‘alīmā.”
- **Fixed in continuation, not when stopping** (madd al-ṣilah al-ṣughrā): the pronoun Hā’ between two vowels: *innahu kāna*.
