# The Rulings of Sa'i between Safa and Marwa: A Comprehensive Guide for New Muslims

<div class="whiteboard-box">- 🕋 **Sa‘i between Safā and Marwah is a pillar** (rukn) of Hajj and ‘Umrah according to the majority; neither is valid without it and it is not compensated by a sacrifice.
- 🔢 **Seven circuits**: Safā to Marwah is one circuit, Marwah to Safā is another; you begin at Safā and end at Marwah.
- 💧 **Ablution is not a condition** for it, though being in a state of purity is recommended.
- 🚶‍♀️ A man does **brisk walking (ramal)** between the two green markers; women do not.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Many new Muslims contact **Iqraa Irtaqii Academy** before performing ‘Umrah asking about the Sa‘i. This is a summary of the rulings with references.

### Its basis in the Qur’an

Allah says: “Indeed, Safā and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘Umrah — there is no blame upon him for walking between them.” \[al-Baqarah: 158\]. It is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed Sa‘i between Safā and Marwah and said: “Perform Sa‘i, for Allah has prescribed Sa‘i upon you.”

### Its ruling

IslamWeb’s fatwa section states:

> “Sa‘i between Safā and Marwah is a pillar of Hajj and ‘Umrah without which neither is valid, and it is not compensated for by a sacrifice according to the preponderant view of the scholars.”

### How the Sa‘i is performed

1. After ṭawāf, the person goes to the mas‘ā and begins at **Safā**, reciting the verse above and saying: “I begin with what Allah began with.”
2. He ascends Safā slightly, faces the qiblah, and supplicates.
3. He walks to **Marwah**; a man does brisk walking between the two green markers.
4. At Marwah he does as he did at Safā. That is two circuits (there and back = two circuits).
5. He completes **seven circuits**, ending at Marwah.
