# The Places of Iqlab in the Quran: A Reference List with Examples

What is Iqlaab in the Science of Tajweed?

At Iqraa Irtaqii Academy, we consider the **Science of Tajweed** to be the faithful guardian that preserves the authentic pronunciation of the Quran just as it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Among the fundamental rules we train our students in is the rule of **Iqlaab (Conversion/Alteration)**. Linguistically, Iqlaab means turning something around. In Tajweed terminology, it refers to converting a Noon Saakin or Tanween into a hidden Meem with Ghunnah (nasalization) when it is followed by the letter Ba (ب).

The phonetic reason for this rule is the difficulty of pronouncing a clear Noon and then immediately transitioning to the articulation point of Ba while maintaining Ghunnah. Thus, Iqlaab (converting Noon to Meem) occurs to facilitate ease of pronunciation and achieve a smooth recitation.

Steps to Apply the Iqlaab Rule
------------------------------

To apply Iqlaab correctly and practically, follow these steps that we dictate to our students:

- **The Conversion:** Turn the sound of the Noon Saakin or Tanween into a pure Meem (م) verbally, not in writing.
- **The Concealment (Ikhfa):** Conceal this newly formed Meem when pronouncing the Ba. This is done by lightly touching the lips together without pressing them tightly.
- **The Ghunnah:** Give this concealed Meem a nasal sound (Ghunnah) lasting for exactly two counts.

In the Mus'haf (the written Quran), the Iqlaab rule is indicated by a small Meem (مـ) placed over the Noon Saakin or replacing the second stroke of the Tanween as a visual guide for the reader.

- **Within one word:** Allah says *(أَنبِئْهُم)* (Anbi'uhum), pronounced as "Am-bi'uhum".
- **Between two words (Noon Saakin):** Allah says *(مِن بَعْدِ)* (Min Ba'd), pronounced as "Mim Ba'd".
- **With Tanween:** Allah says *(سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ)* (Samee'un Baseer), pronounced as "Samee'um-Baseer".
