# The Virtues of Quranic Surahs: What is Authentic from the Hadiths and What is Not

\[whiteboard\]

- 📖 **The Golden Rule:** The virtue of any surah is only taken from authentic or good hadith, not from popularity or circulation among people.
- ✅ **Its virtues are established with a sound chain:** Al-Baqarah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kafirun, Al-Mulk (Blessed).
- ⚠️ **No authentic hadith has been established for the Prophet ﷺ:** Yasin, Ad-Dukhan, Al-Waqi'a (there is a hadith reported from Ibn Abbas, but not an elevated one), Al-Kawthar.
- 🕌 **Practical Benefit:** Relying only on authentic hadith protects your worship from innovation and from attributing unreliable statements to the Prophet ﷺ.

</div>Why Do We Differentiate Between Authentic and Weak Hadiths in the Virtues of Surahs?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many posts circulating on social media attribute great virtues to a specific surah without mentioning the source of the hadith or its grade. This exposes the reader to two dangers: worshiping based on a hadith that has not been established from the Prophet ﷺ, and attributing words to him that he did not say.

- **Authentic/Good Hadith:** It is valid to use it as evidence and to act upon its virtue, such as the hadith "Say, He is Allah, One, it is equivalent to a third of the Quran" (reported by Muslim).
- **Very Weak or Fabricated Hadith:** It is not permissible to attribute it to the Prophet ﷺ even in the virtues of deeds according to the majority of scholars, especially if it is extremely weak.

> From Abu Darda, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet ﷺ: "Is any of you unable to read a third of the Quran in one night?" They said: "How can one read a third of the Quran?" He said: "Say, He is Allah, One, it is equivalent to a third of the Quran." — Reported by Muslim. [Source: Islam Web](https://www.islamweb.net/ar/fatwa/35363/)

Reference Table: Which Surahs Have Established Virtues with a Sound Chain?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This table is a quick summary, and each line has its complete explanation with evidence in a separate article from this series.

<table class="table table-bordered"><thead><tr><th>Surah</th><th>Judgment of the Hadiths Reported in It</th><th>Most Famous Established Virtue</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Al-Baqarah</td><td>Authentic</td><td>Drives away the devil from the house, and Ayat Al-Kursi prevents entry to Paradise except through death</td></tr><tr><td>Al-Kahf</td><td>Authentic</td><td>Protection from the trial of the Dajjal by memorizing ten verses, and the light between the two Fridays</td></tr><tr><td>Al-Mulk (Blessed)</td><td>Good</td><td>Intercedes for its owner until he is forgiven, and prevents the punishment of the grave</td></tr><tr><td>Al-Ikhlas</td><td>Authentic</td><td>It is equivalent to a third of the Quran</td></tr><tr><td>Yasin</td><td>No authentic elevated hadith has been established</td><td>The hadiths reported about "the heart of the Quran" are weak or not authentically elevated</td></tr><tr><td>Al-Waqi'a</td><td>Reported from Ibn Abbas, not elevated to the Prophet ﷺ</td><td>"Hud and Al-Waqi'a... have made me gray" (a saying from Ibn Abbas)</td></tr></tbody></table>

Conclusion: How Can You Benefit from This Rule in Your Daily Memorization?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This does not prevent you from reciting any surah from the Quran; all of the Quran is good and blessed without exception. But when teaching your children the virtue of a specific surah, link it to a reliable authentic evidence that teaches them how to verify religious information themselves in the future.
